Tiétar Valley Naturally

Tourist Information

We are located in La Adrada, in the heart of the Tiétar Valley, a place full of dense forests and valleys shaped by the eternal whims of numerous gorges and streams that populate an area rich in flora and fauna.

The altitude contrasts between the peaks and the valley floor, which influence the distribution of plant and animal species, have created a large number of different biotopes that host a rich variety of both flora and fauna.

Exuberant Flora

In the lower parts of the valley, up to 800 meters in altitude, oak groves, cork oaks, junipers, and hawthorns dominate. The shrubland consists of rockroses, lavender, black broom, heather, and thyme. The landscape of the river plain is formed by well-preserved riparian forests, alternating with orchards and small crops due to its proximity to the river.

On the slopes, up to 1,600 meters in altitude, resin pine forests and the cultivation of olive trees, cherry trees, fig trees, chestnuts, walnuts, and hazelnuts are abundant. We can also find melojo oak and juniper on eroded gravelly soils and steep slopes. The shrubland consists of broom bushes, broom-like plants, gorse, and heather.

In the higher parts of the valley, up to 2,200 meters in altitude, the vegetation is adapted to the low temperatures and strong winds, with gorse dominating, interspersed with white heather.

Wild Fauna

In the lower parts of the valley, up to 800 meters in altitude, one of the endangered species, the black stork, settles during its breeding period. This space is also shared by a rich variety of birds of prey, such as the booted eagle, the short-toed eagle, the black kite, the red kite, and the sparrowhawk. Also abundant are magpies, jays, and reptiles like the ocellated lizard and the red-tailed lizard.

On the slopes, up to 1,600 meters in altitude, we find a rich birdlife composed of booted eagles, short-toed eagles, buzzards, goshawks, woodpeckers, great spotted woodpeckers, jays, great tits, blue tits, crested tits, and coal tits, among others. Notable mammals in this area include wild boar, foxes, stone martens, deer, and roe deer.
In the higher parts of the valley, up to 2,200 meters in altitude, we can find the wild goat and the golden eagle, as well as griffon vultures, black vultures, and mountain and Iberian lizards.

La Adrada and its Medieval Castle

The best way to explore this town, located at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos, is to leisurely stroll through its streets, enjoying the beautiful corners that we may discover along the way.

At the top of La Adrada, its Castle rises on a hill, and it is a must-visit. Recently restored, the castle’s rooms have been turned into the “Historical Interpretation Center of the Tiétar Valley.” Here, you can see models of the castle in all its splendor, learn about the history of the area through the battles that took place, and view many replicas of weapons and armor used by the defenders of the Castle of La Adrada during its sieges.

A visit to the “multimedia” dungeon is a must for younger visitors who will be thrilled by it, and the apse of the old church often hosts various concerts. Remember: the Castle of La Adrada and the Historical Interpretation Center are places you cannot miss!

Recommended Visits

Paraíso del Tiétar is a fantastic starting point, ideal for exploring the entire valley, which is full of history, such as the Castle of La Adrada, the Valley Interpretation Center; Pedrobernardo with its narrow streets and typical figs, also known as the “Balcony of Tiétar”; Lanzahita, where you can’t leave without trying its watermelons or asparagus, depending on the season. The Roman road, a fantastic piece of engineering, can be admired at the Puerto del Pico and is visible in few places.

The Eagle Caves, discovered in 1963, showcase their whimsical formations; Arenas de San Pedro, known as the Andalusia of Ávila, with notable buildings such as the Castle of Condestable Dávalos and the Palace of Don Luis de Borbón; Piedralaves, with impressive views of the valley, which were immortalized in a book by Nobel laureate Camilo José Cela; the port and village of Mijares, where you can walk the path to the Cabezo de Mijares, etc.
